The Ongoing Discussion
Fortune with her wheel
May lift men up from low,
Or knock them from their thrones
To cast them far below,
Topple mighty giants
And set them at the feet
Of ordinary townsfolk
Accustomed only to defeat.
And with these revolutions
She shapes our history,
With its countless permutations
Of loss and victory.
If she toward you beckons
Take her hand and hold it fast,
Or you’ll find that decisive moment
All too soon has passed.
